From Sweating to Sweaters

One of my favorite things to do is to sit and think about what I was doing this same time last week, and what I’ll be doing this same time next week. For the last few years, the answer was often, “Working and…working.” There wasn’t much of a difference from one Monday to the next, and so I guess it wasn’t my favorite exercise to do since the answer was always the same.

Lately it’s been anything but the same from week to week, and it’s always fascinating to see the difference in not only our location, but our activities. Just two Mondays ago in the southern tip of Baja in Mexico, I was sweating as if sitting in a constant sauna, taking cold showers 3 times a day, sticking my head in the freezers at grocery stores, and suffering through a heat rash all over my chest and back. I was hearing geckos in the evenings, swatting at mosquitoes, and drinking all the cold, iced water I could get.

This time last Monday we were spending the evening in San Diego with an old high school friend of mine, Theresa, and her husband Kevin. Since we haven’t seen each other in over 4 years, there was a lot of catching up to do. I got caught up on the latest news of my prior classmates, of who married who, who has kids, and who’s already divorced. We also had some of Kevin’s birthday Butterfinger ice cream cake, which was fabulous. The next day we went for a run on the trails near Torrey Pines golf course, on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, and were overwhelmed by how different that morning was from the prior Monday in Mexico.

Now we find ourselves a week later in Ocean City, NJ, on the complete opposite coast and in a completely different climate. The end of fall is here and winter is moving into many parts of the US, and here the highs are in the 50’s and 60’s, and the lows in the 30’s and 40’s. We had a warm bowl of homemade veggie/bean soup with our friends Vince and Doris while watching football at their place, and now I’m sitting in my favorite sweatpants and sweatshirt, steeping a cup of Orange Spice tea, loving the cool air that the end of fall has brought.

This time next week we should be around North Carolina, visiting family, so we’ll once again be on the move, changing the scenery and the people we’re around. The constants seem to be running, good food, and good people, all pieces that I’m happy to include in my daily life. I’m enjoying each day as it comes, and always excited to see what happens next.
